This website provides information about our current project to better understand and address flood and geohazard risk in the Boundary region. This is a first step to enable decision-makers to focus efforts on developing modern flood hazard maps for the region. Hazard maps are a foundational tool to develop mitigation strategies.

The project study area includes Electoral Areas C, D, and E of the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary. It does not include the Village of Midway and the cities of Greenwood and Grand Forks, as those municipalities are part of separate flood mapping initiatives.

  1. Outline areas that are susceptible to flood and geohazards.
  2. Identify assets that are valuable to the community and that are in the way of these hazards.
  3. Engage with a range of community stakeholders and build community resilience.
  4. Assess relative risk to support the development of detailed flood maps and emergency management plans.

Local governments within urban areas of the RDKB have put significant effort in recent years to understand and mitigate floods. This project takes a broader view with a focus on small communities and rural zones within Electoral Areas C, D, and E (the Boundary region of the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary). The project area is shown with orange outlines.

The majority of the project area occurs within the Kettle River watershed, shown in dark purple. This transboundary watershed originates in BC, then it meanders south to the US prior to reaching Grand Forks, and flows back south at Christina Lake. A small portion in the southwest corner of the project area is located within the Okanagan watershed.

Your photos of recent and historical flood and geohazard related impacts can be insightful for the project team. Example photos can include:

  • A high river bank during a flood 
  • Water ponding on a property following a flood
  • A hillslope failure after a heavy rain event
  • Signs of channel erosion

The photos can help the project team answer questions such as "How have the hillslopes and river channel systems changed over time?", "When and where have significant events occurred?", and "What assets have these events impacted?
