McKelvey Creek Regional Landfill - 2023 Upgrade and Construction Project

Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Linkedin Email this link

Change is coming to the McKelvey Creek Regional Landfill in Trail due to the upgrade of the facility. The primary driver for these upgrades is to allow for necessary space for the upcoming Organics Diversion project. RDKB Areas A and B, and the municipalities of Rossland, Warfield, Trail, Montrose, and Fruitvale will have residential curbside green bin food waste collection starting in October 2023. LATEST UPDATES:

Head to our video section and drive with us through the new road layout and see how construction is coming on in our photos section. You will notice that the recycling area has moved to a new temporary location on-site.

Please do not bring your trailers here during construction. It is too tight for vehicles to pull in with trailer loads and it causes a traffic congestion issue.

We have now switched to volume based tipping fees until further notice. These are listed in our documents section.

TRAIL BOTTLE DEPOT

During construction, why not check out what you can take to the Trail Bottle Depot in the Gulch. They accept way more than what you can take to the McKelvey Creek Landfill for ‘recycling’. Check it out! New products accepted as of Jan 1, 2023 are listed here: https://recyclebc.ca/newitems/

PLUS, AT A GLANCE:

  1. Electronics: https://recyclemyelectronics.ca/bc/what-can-i-recycle/
  2. Small appliances: From hand-held drills, microwaves, vacuums, and bench-top table saws, lamps to Christmas lights, remote control cars and video game units.
  3. Paint products - paint cans, spray cans
  4. All blue-bin ‘style’ recycling: paper products, cardboard, tin cans, all recyclable plastics and containers, glass containers, foam packaging, and flexible plastics (chip bags, granola bar wrappers, ziplock pouches)
  5. Deposit system – deposit bottles, cans and containers (recently added is all milk containers, jugs, and cartons!)

They can't take everything though. Residents have tried to drop off all sorts, including the following which are a no-go :

  • Small air conditioners
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Propane tanks
  • Chemicals
  • Fridges/stoves
  • Treadmill!

At McKelvey from February to July 2023 please expect the following:

  • Delays & Disruptions. We appreciate your patience and kindness towards staff working on site.
  • New Road Layouts. For your Health & Safety, please obey all rules on site, slow down and pay attention to changes and traffic flow on site.
  • Possible Closures. Check this page, the news page on our website, and follow our social media platforms regularly, especially before your trip to the landfill, to find out the latest about what is happening on site. You can find us on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram (rdkbdotcom).
  • Tipping fees will be based on volume not weight when the scales are being changed. Please refer to the volume based user fee schedule on this page.
  • Please separate and pre-sort all material BEFORE arriving at the landfill. Proper separation of materials will speed up the drop off process and it will save you money $$ in tipping fees.

So, how can you help?

  • Only come to the landfill if necessary. Using your curbside collection service will always be cheaper, more convenient and will reduce traffic volume on site. The Trail Bottle Depot in the Gulch can also be used for recycling household recyclables plus deposit based items.
  • If you do need to dispose of garbage, don't come to the landfill with just one bag, come less often, with more bags - this will also save you $$.

Scope of Work - The Project will include:

  • Relocation of the existing recycling area
  • Expansion of the transfer station area to accommodate organics diversion program
  • Replacement of the existing weigh scale with two new weigh scales (in-and-out scales)
  • Installation of water and sewer services
  • Installation of fibre optic for better connectivity

Can we bring a mattress & box spring there while you are renovating?

V.E. Spies asked 4 days ago

Yes, you can take everything there that you did before, but instead of being weight based the fees will be based on volume.  These volume based tipping fees will be calculated when you stop at the building pictured below.

Can you tell me which spot will have the foam and plastic bags and overwrap as they used to be outside the paint building? Thank you.

Dana asked about 1 month ago

Thanks for your question Dana.  The best place for your plastic bags, overwrap and foam during McKelvey construction is at the Trail Bottle depot in the 'Gulch', they take virtually everything you take to the McKelvey recycling area including paints, all paper, plastics, electronics, glass bottles and all deposit recycling.

McKelvey will have the recycling area moved from the present location and there will be signage to direct you to the new location in the actual landfill area entrance (Please see the posted Maps above).  Please note that there could be delays due to the contruction and we ask for the public's patience during this time.

Who is design Engineer and Civil contractor do upgrades?

Mark Martin asked about 1 month ago

Hello Mark!  Thank-you for your question.

'Copcan' is Civil Contractor and 'Tetra Tech' is Design Engineer for the McKelvey Creek Regional Landfill Upgrade Project.

As you requested, my comment from IG. Would be great if RDKB would sponsor a bear proof bin like the NCA used to have in sunningdale/glenmerry. It was a great resource for the odd time I needed to get rid of residential waste outside of my normal pickup. It might be especially helpful during construction for these improvements!

Kash asked about 2 months ago

Thanks for the comment Kash.  We appreciate your suggestion, however at this time, that is not an option we are considering.  Our primary goal for the McKelvey Creek Regional Landfill Upgrade Project is to try and maintain access with minimized impacts to the facility users.

How about recycles from downtown services like United Church food bank? Will these be picked up by recycle contractor to eliminate private vehicle drop off at McKelvey?

Howard McMeekin asked about 2 months ago

Thank-you for your question Howard.  The ICI (Industrial, Commercial & Institutional) sector is all private contracts for waste and recycling - and our upcoming organics collection and pick-up would be the same. Our residential organics pick-up program will service residential single family homes and units containing 4 units or less as long as they have curbside access for bin placement.
