The McKelvey Creek Regional Landfill in Trail has had an upgrade to the facility. The primary driver for these upgrades was to allow for necessary space for the Organics Diversion project. RDKB Areas A and B, and the municipalities of Rossland, Warfield, Trail, Montrose, and Fruitvale now have residential curbside green bin food waste collection that started in October 2023. Click the green bin and garbage collection schedule HERE.

LATEST UPDATES at McKelvey:

If you need to contact McKelvey Creek Landfill during the upgrade and construction project, please use the following telephone number: 250-368-0231.

Head to our video section and drive with us through the new road layout and see how construction is coming on in our photos section. You will notice that the recycling area has moved to a new temporary location on-site.

Please do not bring your trailers with scrap metal during construction as it is too tight for vehicles to pull in with trailer loads and it causes a traffic congestion issue (this area is no longer drive-through during construction). Bringing trailers with any other mixed waste is acceptable.

We have now switched to volume based tipping fees until further notice. These are listed in our documents section.

TRAIL BOTTLE DEPOT

During construction, why not check out what you can take to the Trail Bottle Depot in the Gulch. They accept way more than what you can take to the McKelvey Creek Landfill for ‘recycling’. Check it out! New products accepted as of Jan 1, 2023 are listed here: https://recyclebc.ca/newitems/

PLUS, AT A GLANCE:

  1. Electronics: https://recyclemyelectronics.ca/bc/what-can-i-recycle/
  2. Small appliances: From hand-held drills, microwaves, vacuums, and bench-top table saws, lamps to Christmas lights, remote control cars and video game units.
  3. Paint products - paint cans, spray cans
  4. All blue-bin ‘style’ recycling: paper products, cardboard, tin cans, all recyclable plastics and containers, glass containers, foam packaging, and flexible plastics (chip bags, granola bar wrappers, ziplock pouches)
  5. Deposit system – deposit bottles, cans and containers (recently added is all milk containers, jugs, and cartons!)

They can't take everything though. Residents have tried to drop off all sorts, including the following which are a no-go :

  • Small air conditioners
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Propane tanks
  • Chemicals
  • Fridges/stoves
  • Treadmill!

GENERAL TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT LAYOUT : GARBAGE DISPOSAL (View in Project Documents)

At McKelvey from February to July 2023 please expect the following:

  • Delays & Disruptions. We appreciate your patience and kindness towards staff working on site.
  • New Road Layouts. For your Health & Safety, please obey all rules on site, slow down and pay attention to changes and traffic flow on site.
  • Possible Closures. Check this page, the news page on our website, and follow our social media platforms regularly, especially before your trip to the landfill, to find out the latest about what is happening on site. You can find us on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram (rdkbdotcom).
  • Tipping fees will be based on volume not weight when the scales are being changed. Please refer to the volume based user fee schedule on this page.
  • Please separate and pre-sort all material BEFORE arriving at the landfill. Proper separation of materials will speed up the drop off process and it will save you money $$ in tipping fees.
  • Contact Numbers: The main line (250.364.9834) will be back in service in June 2023. In the meantime, please use 250.368.0231

So, how can you help?

  • Only come to the landfill if necessary. Using your curbside collection service will always be cheaper, more convenient and will reduce traffic volume on site. The Trail Bottle Depot in the Gulch can also be used for recycling household recyclables plus deposit based items.
  • If you do need to dispose of garbage, don't come to the landfill with just one bag, come less often, with more bags - this will also save you $$.

Scope of Work - The Project will include:

  • Relocation of the existing recycling area
  • Expansion of the transfer station area to accommodate organics diversion program
  • Replacement of the existing weigh scale with two new weigh scales (in-and-out scales)
  • Installation of water and sewer services
  • Installation of fibre optic for better connectivity

Where can I dispose of a tree stump 12” diameter

    Randy asked 6 months ago

Hi Randy - you can dispose of this tree stump at our McKelvey Landfill site.  If it is the entire stump with root balls (stump in the ground), it will be processed as demolition waste ($175/tonne) .... if it is the 'above ground' tree, including the tree itself it will be processed as clean wood waste ($50/tonne).
They will sort you out at the McKelvey (Trail) Landfill site when you arrive.

Please feel free to call (250) 368-0231 if you have any other questions.

    Penny asked 11 months ago

    Hi Penny,

You can take a dead horse to McKelvey Creek Landfill, but be sure to call ahead (250) 364-9834.  They will need to prep a hole for the horse before you arrive for disposal.  They will also need to know how the horse died (any ailment, disease etc.).

There will be a small fee for disposal.

Yes.  The McKelvey (Trail) Landfill takes BOTH assembled and unassembled BBQs for a minimun charge, likely $3 minimum charge (please remove the propane tank).

Also - you can call Local Industrial in Genelle, they take scrap metal and appliances, they will likely take it for free, but please call ahead: (250) 608-5888.  1055 Courtesy Rd. Genelle, BC.

Vicky asked over 1 year ago

    Thanks for the question Vicky,

YES you can dispose a fridge at McKelvey.... and No cost to bring a refrigerator to McKelvey Creek Regional Landfill.

The large appliance recycling program in BC is known as 'MARR'.  When a new appliance is purchased in BC you pay a fee that helps cover the recycling costs of the appliances, therefore there are no charges during disposal of these products.

Is an old wooden picket fence considered construction waste? Can it be disposed of at your site?

TJ asked over 1 year ago

Hey TJ, thanks for the question!

If the wood has been painted or treated, it will be 'construction-demolition waste', but if it is just raw lumber, it would be classified as 'clean-wood'.

Either way, it is accepted at our McKelvey Creek Site.

Hello, Is there a cost to bring an older washer and dryer to the landfill? If so what is the cost?

Bryan O’Malley asked over 1 year ago

    Great question Bryan.

No cost to bring a washer and dryer to McKelvey Creek Regional Landfill.

There is a large appliance recycling program in BC known as 'MARR' (Major Applicance Recycling Roundtable).  When a new appliance is purchased in BC you pay an APF (Administrative Program Fee) that helps cover the recycling costs of the appliances, therefore there are no charges during disposal of these products.

For those that do not have a safe way to store extra waste, a missed collection day can be very difficult to manage without attracting pests, or dangerous wildlife. Now my only option will be to leave the compostables curbside, several days in advance which will quite likely attract even more bears to my neighbourhood. Krista asked over 1 year ago

Thank-you for the question and comments Krista.  Unattended communal bins will not be a component of the RDKB plans for organics collection, or garbage collection.  Once the green bins are delivered, the RDKB will be offering an ability for residents to upgrade from their 80L ‘critter resistant’ green bin, to a certified bear resistant green bin.  This upgrade will be at a cost to the resident.  When we launch this component of the program this fall, we will notify the public with pricing and location of the green bin/bear bin trade in program.  Finally, you can use the McKelvey Creek Regional Landfill to drop-off both garbage and organics (this fall) outside of regular curbside collection dates.
