About

The South Kootenay Agricultural Strategy will be a 10-year plan to strengthen and grow the food and agriculture sector in the region.

The Strategy encompasses the following areas of the RDKB:

  • RDKB Electoral Area A
  • RDKB Electoral Area B/Lower Columbia-Old Glory
  • Municipalities of Rossland, Trail, Fruitvale, Warfield, and Montrose

Objectives

1. Identify existing food and agriculture assets, understand key issues facing producers and food business owners, and find opportunities for local governments to support and strengthen the agriculture sector.

2. Protect and increase the productivity of agricultural lands within the region.

3. Develop recommendations for local governments to ensure that agriculture and food contributes to the long term environmental, social, and economic sustainability of the region.

Want to Be Involved?

We want to ensure that the plan reflects the input of the agricultural community as it will be a tool for the RDKB to set priorities and make decisions. The project team will be using multiple methods to connect with the South Kootenay agriculture and food community.

One way you can become involved is by participating in a survey that will be posted here in early 2022. You can also ask a question or make a comment anytime through the tool below.

Timeline

The Agricultural Strategy got underway in November 2021 and is expected to be completed in the fall of 2022, and includes three phases:

Phase 1: Background scoping and agricultural profile

Phase 2: Stakeholder engagement and issues identification

Phase 3: Development of the Agricultural Strategy

Funding

This project is funded in part by the Governments of Canada and British Columbia through the Investment Agriculture Foundation of BC, the Columbia Basin Trust, and RDKB Gas Tax funds are providing additional support. The work is being conducted by Upland Agricultural Consulting in association with Urban Food Strategies

The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) has contracted Upland Agricultural Consulting to develop the South Kootenay Agricultural Strategy.
